Board Positions Available
If you are interested in becoming a Board Member, please email us your resume and a short message outlining how you would like to help.
In light of the board and executive restructure currently underway at the organization, the search for nominees to fill up to seven Board seats must reflect the need for highly accomplished individuals who understand non-profit organizations and with a strong sense of commitment. The following eight criteria reflect what we seek in a future Board member:
1. Passion for our Renewed Vision and Mission
It is critical that Board members embrace and support the direction in which the ACC is headed. The key question for each Board member is Why do you care? Why does this mission matter to you and what about it has meaning for you? The alignment between a Board member’s passion and the mission of the organization is fundamental.
2. Expertise and Ability that Complements this Pivotal Phase
With the numerous changes that are taking place, nominees should have experience in one or more of the following:
- organizational growth, structures and strategies
- strategic planning experience
- development and outreach
3. Philanthropic History
The nominees should be made aware that the expectation is that the ACC will be one of their top philanthropic priorities. Board members should feel they are setting an example for the organization, and their giving should be promoted to the constituency to encourage their giving (100% participation in all campaigns).
4. Reputation and Integrity
Every Board member must possess a positive reputation and one that is not demeaning or degrading in any way. The most essential ingredient should be integrity; all else falls to opinion and rhetoric that we do not control.
5. Advocacy for the ACC
Board members should be ready, willing and able to advocate for the organization within their communities and through their associations.
6. Connection to Resources
Board members should possess connections to donors, foundations and government, and should be willing to use those connections for the betterment of the organization.
7. Time to Commit
All board members should be prepared to give time to the organization. This is not only in the form of participating in meetings and committees, but in having examined information beforehand and staying engaged in what is happening with the organization. Each board member will be expected to serve on one or more Committees.
8. Representative of a Cross-Section of Our Constituency
Representation across communities is an important aspect of the ACC’s Board. It is important that Board members come from various cultures, genders, ages, socio-economic levels, and possess varying associations inside and outside of the Arlington community.
